Thread: VVT problem, I have a question about the solution

I have a s14 sr20det, making that nasty VVt rattle, I know its the sprocket because i disconected the vvt and it still made the sound

So my question is, if i just get some good cams, like tomei or greddy, for example, and delete the vvt

would that soulve my problem? and would i loose any power? would it be worth it

no , the rattling could be chain hitting the guide... must pin point and fix that if not youll be in a world of hurt sooner then expected.

Could be the chain but if its fairly loud its probably vvt. Ive seen it before and it is fairly common with the s14 motors. However if you havent gotten the new style tensioner yet i recommend doing that before doing anything drastic. It wont hurt anything and is one of the better things you can do to an sr motor.

Also yes you can get a regular performance intake cam that is for the normal s13 and run that and replace the vvt sprocket with a normal cam sproket and leave the vvt disconnected. You will make more power with the aftermarket cam. I wouldnt go with a tomei cam though. Too expensive and not nearly the best option out there. If you want a good cam look into the jwt s4's and a couple other brands out there. The Brian crower stage 2s have a similar profile to the s4's but dont quite make the power they do because of centerline differences. You can find a set of s4's used for pretty cheap now a days and by far one of the best turbo cams for the SR period. More power all the way through the powerband. Only thing the vvt really does is help spool time down low. Who cares especially if your running a T2 turbo anyways. They already spool rediculously fast. No need for the vvt. Its pointless otherwise.

I think since I am eventually going to go for 350 hp I might aswell get the BC stage 2, i think its 270, cams valve springs retainers, and rocker arm stoppers.

I know then ill delete the vvt all togather, my timing will be on point, and the rattle will be gone regardless =)

added with the cams im hoping for a nice hp gain

will cams able me to rev higher btw?

no need for springs and retainers with the stage 2's, dont put rocker arm stoppers. thats a no no. Read up, there are tons of threads on here going over the negative about using them. Other than that, happy boosting.

Hmm i keep finding mixed feeling about rocker arm stoppers, But I did find this quote from another forum

Yes they will still be "ok" with springs and retainer upgrade but are not necessary. I was running the jwt c2 cams with bc springs and retainers on my de head reving to 8700 no problem. No reason you cant run a bc stage 2 cam especially with springs and retainers to 8k no problem.

If its a t28 which it should be unless it was changed out, with an s4 type cam, fmic and 12psi will make around 245-255whp i would imagine.

Im getting BC cams 264, valve springs, retainers, valves, and the head machined, head gasket, and cam gears....cant wait to get the car back...
