Startup Piston Slap??
Hey,

After I installed a new timing chain tensioner I've noticed when I start the car up, especially after having ran the engine and letting it rest for a few hours, at low RPM I can hear piston slap for about 2 seconds and then goes away. I'm not sure if it was the timing chain tensioner or just a coincidence or maybe just because the weather is getting hotter and oil thinner?? I recently switched to a 10w-40 oil and it's not AS noticeable. At least I don't hear it on cold start ups as much.

Anyone else have this? From what I've read it can be 'normal'?

Thanks!

I have something similar.

Not sure if its piston slap though.

When i start up ( not all the time but does it sometimes when cold or hot) It sounds like its coming from the cylinder head. only for a few sec, it sounds dry like no oil, then once pressure builds up it goes away. Car runs fine and everything. Really bugs the shit out of me though. Sounds horrible and makes my car seem like a junker.

Did you leave the upper chain guide in? The chain could be hitting that for some reason.

Sounds like we have the same issue. I do notice it worse when oil is thin/hot. Doesn't seem to do it on cold mornings.

Upper chain guide is out.

I run OEM Nissan filters only and synthetic oil

I think I may put the old tensioner in and see if the sound goes away.

Stupid question but you un-hooked the new tensioner, correct?

I heard it unhook and click down a bunch as I was turning crank.

Sounds like the typical start-up clatter that lasts until the oil pressure builds up in the tensioner.
