Be sure that the resufacing process was done good. When I resurface mine the first time was done incorrectly and then I went to another machine and they fixed it. No problem after that.

How do you mean it was done incorrectly? When I get a flywheel back after resurfacing, the only thing I can tell is that material was taken off. I can't really tell how it was done or if there's any issue with it. That's why I take it to a shop to begin with, they know and I don't. While maybe, maybe thats an issue, it's not something I can control.

wingman i went through 2 discs inspected everything on last try and half of a throw out bearing clip was gone.. .. the disc itself looked brand new, the springs blew out each time.. only one spring though. in the webbing of the block i had pieces of metal from that and i had to clean all of it out. good size chunks. i just post to it so you can compare.. probably is something different.. but you did go through discs and spring did pop out.

I understand where you're coming from, but I already checked out the TOB. My first post even says it's in 'great shape' so that is not the issue.

New clutch, new alignment dowels, and new bolts all installed. Alot of the trans noise I could faintly hear at idle before are now gone, so im optimistic this has vastly improved things. The noises both me and my friends dismissed as normal, but now I'm thinking not so much

Also, ACT was apparently able to re-hub that disc in my first pictures. So now, a spare clutch disc I may never use sits in my garage.

After a few months we'll see for sure if this problem was solved or not. If not, I'm truly at a loss.

Good luck man! If it happens again, I strongly suggest checking the flywheel. It should have a 0.020" step and be perfectly flat. The step should be very slight, but noticeable. If you don't have calipers, get some. The cheapo digital ones at HF work pretty well and can be had for under $15.

OK, bad news: it happened again. Granted this clutch more than doubled the miles the last one had, but it still happened. I'd like to dismiss it as a reason not to use ACT clutches, but there are plenty of guys here with ACTs that have had zero problems. So what the hell is causing this?

In a day or two the trans is coming off, and I'll check the flywheel then also. I do have a spare, so I can talk about machining that before diving in and just replacing the existing. Will, you might be on to something with that as I never actually paid that much attention to the flywheel, but based on all the discussion lately it makes tons of sense.

Any other thoughts? There are only a few things I can think of that would cause clutch splines to be stripped away by the input shaft. The flywheel thought is that the clutch is too far toward the engine and that taper on the input shaft slowly works it's way through the clutch. I thought alignment, and replaced everything that affects it last time. It did help, both in longevity and reducing noise. Plus, having this on 2 transmissions makes me shy away from a diagnosis of a bad transmission.

Thoughts, anyone? I'm set to put in a new disc and my spare flywheel, what else should I check other than the obvious (already will be checking flywheel step and surface, and input shaft for play, also replacing TOB and clips with OEM).

Yeah I will be, but it's tough to put in another disc without knowing why. Rather find out something and fix it than throw parts at it every 4-5 months.
