Thread: Reasons for no cilinder activity

Ok, I'm going nuts.

For a while now, my engine has been running like crap.

Today, I finally figured out it's ALWAYS running on just 3 cilinders, 3rd cilinder just doesn't function. It DOES explain why I can't go faster than 170 KPH (about 100MPH).

What I have done:

New plugs (3rd is fouled, and black)
New dizzy, rotor, cables

The cables spark just fine (tried a couple of them, swapping in an old (but functional) set), I can hear the spark going fron the cable to the plug.

The injectors all fire as well. My guy made sure by pulling the rail out, and turning the rotor so they all fired one at a time.


Last thing I can think of is the fouled plug, that it fails to spark.

I've revved the engine with 4 cables in place, and the 3rd removed. Same sound, same behaviour.

Help?

do a compression check sounds like your #3 piston is shot

That would suck :P. She has to go up for inspection next week :S.

Dude had this exact same problem it was the ECU... Please check that.

Best place to start. Could be stuck rings, hole in the piston, stuck open valves, ect.

If you've got good compression, start looking at injectors cause they're all firing, doesn't mean they're putting out the proper amount of fuel, and possible ecu since you've already taken care of the ignition system.

ECU is a CalumSult Realtime V2. But isn't the problem, I've had the problem with my old ECU as well. But I'm gonna hook it up to DataScan this Friday, anyways.

Hmm, I just thought of something. Could a gap that's too small be a cause of not burning fuel? I mean, if the arc is too short, could it fail to light the mixture?

pop the valve cover off. You could have broken a rocker arm guide and lost the rocker arm. That happened on our LeMons SR20. We got 0 psi on cylinder #2 from a compression test. When we pulled the valve cover we saw the rocker arm sitting over to the side, just hangin out. Was a pretty quick and easy fix once we had the new shim and guide.

Yes that is one side-effect of a gap that is much too small.

Turned out the gap was actually too big... Still the same problem, though. I give up.

Gases tested 1,2 % for CO, and I'm allowed to have 3,5%. So probably inspection next week, and then on to the VE.
