Gear Whine
iI don't post often , but need your thoughts on the source of this new noise. I'm located in N.Va. so Jens 36 and Classicaddict, your thoughts as mechanics yourselves would be particularly helpful. Recently completed 5th gear pop out repair with full kit from Greg at SpecG performance. Car ran perfectly...NO issues at all. That was about 3 weeks ago. Just a day or so ago, the car started emitting a pronounced whine, ONLY in 3rd gear and ONLY on acceleration ( decleration in 3rd gear the whine goes away?) Car drive and shifts fine, but the noise is always there only on acceleration in 3rd and is getting louder by the day. What is it and why only in 3rd ? Wouldn't be the clutch or it would be there on all gears...I'm at a loss, but something for sure changed as the noise was not there at all for a good three weeks only to suddenly appear..something is going on and it's now getting louder by the mile ????

Wat gear oil are you using? I ask because some are very slipery and allow noise to develop. I heard redline shock proof can cushion the gear teeth and help gear whine but if it is only in 3rd and getting worse you 3rd could be going bad. How did it look when you had the tranny apart?

Chipped teeth, cracked teeth, missing teeth. I would drain the oil and see what comes out. The drain plug is magnetic and should attract anything loose. Drain the oil through a rag or something else that can act as a strainer.

That is a good idea too. At this time you could experiment and change the gear Oil too.

yeah, mine whinned due to stripped and broken gear teeth both on the input shaft gears inside the case and the gears themselves. third and fourth gear whined the most. If your gear oil is good and it still whines then you have a gear problem itself. Thats the only causes for whinning.
