So I finally did something notable. I build a long rod SR20VE. I used an H22 rod and had JE make some custom pistons. The pin is into the oil ring so you can't go much longer. The rod ratio went from 1.56 to 1.59:1 .
The rest of the engine is pretty stock, it has a good valve job, some simple valve unshrouding and matching of the seats to the ports and chambers. The compression is exactly 11:1

My power went from 197 to 205, peak torque was the same. The only effect the longer rod seemed to have was more area under the curve at the power peak and at the beginning of the torque curve. The torque curve got flatter and fell off less. The torque and power peaks are closer.
More area under the curve and a closer power to torque peak are about what I expected. The engine also feels smoother near 8000 rpm and I am going to raise the rev limit to 8300 rpm.
Not a huge difference but interesting.
