It's real hard to get that seal in properly when the tranny is in the car. You probably just need to try another new seal and make sure that you get it in straight and to the correct depth. Then (stating the obvious) make sure that you don't bugger up the new seal when you insert the axle.

Frustrating, but a fairly straightforward problem as long as the opening where the tranny receives the seal has not been damaged.

Similar question guys..about a week ago I was driving and I was going into 4th gear and wouldn't go in..finally it popped in but as soon as it did car stopped accelerating and started leaking fluid from the transmission.
Is it possible it was the clutch that caused the leak?

Any info on that?

Also if you just removed your axle from the carrier bracket as you should. I would check your carrier bracket bolts and make sure they are tight. If they are loose the axle will move around and/or slouch causing it not to sit straight in the seal and leak. Just a thought. They do come loose every now and then especially if they have been taken off before. Other than that, yes the seal is a pain to get in straight and it needs to be perfectly flush with the case to keep from leaking.

The last seal that i put in was loose in the bore, so I coated the outside diameter with RTV before I put it in. Then I waited for the RTV to cure before I installed the axle.

Last time I installed that seal(while it was in the car) I stuck the seal in the freezer for a few minutes it made the install a little bit easier.

freezer method works, I took my tranny off and replaced both seals eventhough I only needed to do one, so much easier that way. Downtime was not an issue for me though...
