Failed Emissions, High Hydrocarbons on inactive car
I just failed the HC part. 220ppm is pass, mine was 240ppm. Last year it was 130ppm.

I hardly ever drive the car. I've probably driven the car less than 500 miles in the past year.

Presumably nothing has changed since last year, in the past 500 miles except for new injectors. Car runs as hard as ever, though, no noticeable drive-ability change.

The car has a S3 cams. I need to double-check timing.

Old gas?

Timing too advanced?

Clogged fuel filter?

I notice absolutely no bad cat conv smell, and it's pretty new. Maybe has 5000 miles on it, if that.

One thing, they made me hold the car at 2500 rpms, but I went under that a few times. Do the cams factor in then? Should I hold it at like 3000 rpms next time?

Retard your timing as much as you can with it still running. It'll drive like crap. I've had to do this with S3 cams in the G and it has helped me pass 2 straight years. When my other G had S3r's I did the same thing with success. Set them back after test. Hope this helps.

You can also use a piece a sheet metal with holes in it and install it as a gasket behind the cat. By doing this, you heat the cat up more making it work better. Pretty simple solution, provided the cat bolts aren't all rusted up.

Thanks Joe. Got your voicemail, I appreciate it.

The S3s have been in since I got the car, so something about sitting around not being driven is the factor.

But I'm going to retard the timing and see. And change the fuel filter.
