I had a similar issue. Battery was brand new red optima and charged full. Starter solenoid clicked rapidly when key was turned or connected directly
to battery positive terminal. Solved it by adding a 4 gauge black wire from
the fender side to one of the starter bolts, 24" long. Before it was added I
had a 6 gauge lawn & garden wire connecting the fender side to the front
of the engine block, but that didn't help. The small wire may have broken
inside, or may be too thin. The 4 gauge did the trick, of course you must
clean the contact points. Starts every time now.

ya make sure all of your grounds are good and there is no corrosion. Also check the clutch inhibitor switch. you can do this by pulling the connection out of the plug and sticking a paperclip in it to bypass the switch

So that's the starter relay isnt it? I got the car checked the other day and the auto elec tested the starter with a test light and its broke, he then gave it a tap with a hammer and it started. He always tested the battery and its fine.
