I've been running shockproof heavy for years. Just recently got 2 brand new gallon jugs of it at a swap meet for 20 bucks

I second that. I installed a JGY version around 70k miles. I could feel a little extra lockup, but not as good as the OEM LSD. Not worth the effort of the install vs. replacing the VLSD IMHO. OK for snow (but washes side to side), not quick enough for rain and just barely OK for higher HP setups that break loose frequently. Mostly because even an old VLSD still locks up after it shears enough. Seems to keep locked up until it "cools?" down.

I miss the stock VLSD in good shape.

Just take your VLSD apart and inject JB Weld between all the plates. Then you have a full-locker.

lol.

What do you guys think?

Don't use shockproof. It will make the diff "clunky" without adding additional friction modifier, ok for the track, not ok for the street. I also had, after pulling the box down, found caked up "deposits" from the shockproof oil. Don't really know why, but from the guy i spoke to about it, he sees it all the time on gearsets where people have used shockproof.

I have used (successfully)

Castrol VMX80 (change it regularly) - good/OK
Motul FF LSD - great
Neo Gold and Platinum HD - great

Out of all those i liked the Motul the best for the street, shockproof was OK on the track where it didn't matter how aggressive the LSD was because it was either on the power enough to lock or off the power. Neo was a little notchy and hard to shift when cold (ok on the track, annoying on a cold morning on the street).

Moved onto a 6speed with HLSD and i'm using Redline MT90 now.

you guys do realize he wants to know if the mech Nismo LSD should run different oil than our standard VLSDs, right? Telling him what you're running isn't really going to help....unless everyone's got a Nismo in their trans

Maybe i didn't make it clear that i used all those oils (except the MT90) with a Nismo LSD...

BRent

It doesn't seem like Shockproof is GL4 rated, only MT-90 is explicitly GL-4 safe. Thus I can see that also being the reason why an official Nissan Tech (Nismo), would say it's not supported.

There is another thread on this topic under this section . But I use Lucas as i had issues using redline shockproof as did other members with a nismo 1.5 unit . If I remember it's a Lucas 75/90 synthetic . Some say they might have changed the formular in the redline but dont hold me to that . I along with others had a clunk issue using the redline shockproof . Again this was about 7 years ago when i installed the nismo unit . If someone else can chime in this please do .Others are recommending using a friction aditive with redline shockproof if you go that route .
