Thread: sr20 vs n1 timing chain tensioner differences?

is there a difference betwen the n1 and the sr 20 timin chin tensioners, i checked on g spec and they have 2 different numbers and 2 different prices wasnt sure if one was better than the other or completely different. they look the same on the website can someone schoool me

the VE timing chain tensioner and the DE are different, yes. Not sure about n1 as compared to other VE's though.

The N1 is the strongest/better of the 3. Just call Greg and ask him about it. It's a few post about it on the board.

Yes it does.

As mentioned it goes out longer and, depending on the revision of the tensioner you have in the car, it has got a finer ratchet mechanism on it so it locks in at smaller increments. This is good to stop chain slap on startup before the oil pressure gets to the tensioner.

As far as I know, all the VVL and low port heads I have worked on have the same tensioner. The High port is different though, and like CozzmO said, has a thicker ratcheting mechanism.

If the N1 is longer, I don't really see the point. Unless your guides are completely worn out, the regular tensioner has more than enough movement to pick up slack. Unless the VVL are all the same? Just going off my experiences, but I'm by no means an expert.

Dre would know the reasoning for a longer throw on the tensioner though.

My 95 DE lowport had the old style.

I have installed the N1. It was longer and had many more and finer teeth. It was much nicer than the one in there from factory.

The reason for the longer throw is due to the reduced overall motor height from the increased compression. This requires, for the same chain length, a longer throw to ensure tension over the same given wear allowance.
