Axle seal dripping.
Ok, so i replaced my clutch yesterday , put it all back together and put fluid in, all of a sudden i see fluid dripping from the pass. side axle seal .

HHHMMM no biggie i thought. Took out the pass. side axle , pulled the seal out and went and got a new one, installed it , put it all back together add fluid, checked to see any leaks, none immediately.

So fast forward to this morning, i see a puddle of gear oil on the ground....WTF???

So i look under and yep its dripping from the pass. side axle seal.

Now, what i used to install it was i used a long extension and put a 30 MM socket and gently tapped it in. It looked like it was sitting in there ok, would the seal have to sit flush with the case in order to prevent leakage?
Or maybe it sitting crooked in the case and i can't tell. I know there is an axle seal driver available, but i'm not sure the size or where to find one.

BTW when i went to the auto parts store they took the P/N off the seal and told me the seal was for a 95 Sentra 1.6. And when he showed me the 2.0 M/T pass. side seal it was fatter and like a hundred thousandth of an inch too wide ( just a guess, ddnt measure ) .

Thanks!

Ah i see, so just tap it in until the outside of the seal sits flush with the case? Because IIRC it sitting a little inside the case...

yes, it needs to be all the way in there flush or it will leak. i finally after all my tranny problem, leak problems i finally got both my stupid axles to stop leaking. its always been the drivers side one on mine. That axle is a pain. never really had any leaks from the passenger side.

Well it is all the way in , but it's not sitting flush with the case, as you can see in the pic, it's a little further in , i'm guessing if i remove it and then just tap it in until it sits flush with the case.

Only thing is , i'm losing a crap load of Redline heavy shockproof gear oil, and as you may know that's not cheap, so i gotta find another seal ASAP LOL

Stating the obvious:
1. Make sure you get the correct seal. From your original post, it was not clear to me whether you bought the 1.6 seal or the 2.0 seal. Maybe even get a Nissan seal from a dealer to make sure it's correct and good quality.
2. Clean everything up and tap the new seal into place.
3. Be careful not to nick the new seal when you install the axle.

That ought to do it unless you really gouged the tranny case when you pulled the old seal out.

I bought the 1.6 seal because thats what was in there before i tore it up.

I also bought the 2.0 seal but it's too big, it won't go in.

Well the 1.6 seal fits snug, the 2.0 doesn't. And i think my problem is that it it isn't sitting flush with the case. And it wasn't leaking until i ripped it trying to wrestle with the tranny. I phucked up when i ddnt remove the pass. side axle.

I took the seal installer from work and it fits perfect.

Oh and i ddnt tap it in from the outside of the seal, i tapped from the inside which is a no no

It's strange that the 1.6 seal fits and 2.0 doesn't. Could the tranny have been swapped at some point? Is that even possible?

Anyway, let us know what the solution is -- you've got me intrigued!
