For kicks, when the temp is up and the car is idling, try running jumper cables from metal on the engine to metal on the chassis and see if the temp gauge goes down. If so, your grounds are bad and need to be replaced.

replace or even just remove the thermostat, see if your problem goes away. The car should basically never warm up, or take forever, if you run it w/o a thermostat

heater works mediocare when the temp is normal, what does that indicate thomas? and yes, it seems my luck is quite damned at the moment lol.

which sensor SJE?

please dont say that stratton lol. if the head has to come off, i will just drive 60 until i can afford VE head.

isfahan/crim, will do. i will report back after i try those. do the grounds/thermostats fail often in these cars?

The one that controls the temp gauge...engine temp sensor?

hmmm you might have a slight hole in one of the hoses by your axle. What happened to me is my carrier axle broke and my axle was spinning around and it hit one of those hoses without me realizing it. I fixed the axle and everything and all was fine when driving but my heater wasnt working at all. Then i noticed my car started to overheat. So i got it back home and had it idleing and i was revving it and it wouldnt overheat. I ended up pouring some water in the radiator and it instantly came out the other side. So maybe you have a small leak somewhere that is allowing the car to stay cool under normal conditions but overheats when you get on it. And that may be why your heater doesnt work all that great. Have you noticed if it is needing coolant every once in a while?

thermostat out, boil some water and put the thermostat in the oiling water and see opens, if i does then the thermostat is good, if it doesnt there is your problem. also when you have the thermostat out, check for rusting around the spring make sure its in good condition.

And if you're low on money just take it out and put it back together. Also a thermostat is like 15 dollars. If anything that 15 dollars and an hour of your time tops is worth not blowing up your engine.

And like others have said it could be a stuck one only allowing some of the heated coolant into the radiatior and that's why with fans manually on it's still not cooling well.

Did you ever mention if the temperature would drop back down if you left the car running? Or have you not tried it? Because I would think it would definitely be a thermostat problem if that were the case.

the problem with taking it out and puttting the housing back together without the thermostat is that it will cause a opposite problem and your engine wont be able to warm up and get out of the warm up enrichment and out of closed loop this will cause you realy bad gas mileage. but like you said 15.00t alot you gotta get it fixed if this is the issue.

also if you get another thermostat see if you can get a failsafe thermostat, this kinda thermostat when it fails it fails open this wont cause you a OVerheating issue

that wouldnt be a good idea either way.

drive till it blows.

i wouldnt do the ve head swap anyways, just get a full sr20ve swap man !

my guess head gasket. how many miles does it take till it actually over heats ?

pull the tstat out. have th motor completely cold, jusp in it, let it idle for maybe 1 min and start driving at high way speeds, 60-70. id say youll drive for say maybe a half hour , till the motor starts to heat soak and the gasket will start leaking. your needle will be fine till all of a sudden, boom it sky rockets. if thats the case, head gasket.

stratton.
