is the clutch changed recently? if the problem started after the installation, its the clutch no question. This remembered me a friend who accidentally inverted the clutch disk, the springs part facing the flywheel..lol and have exactly this same issue the car went into gear only with engine of and when engine on it wont go into gear.... so don't lose time drop down the tranny... good luck!

When Clutch Job Was Done No One Replaced Throw Out Bearing Clips Hence ... Throwout Bearing Is Getting Stuck.. From Prolonged Driving Like This ONE Spring Will Pop Out OF THE DISC And the Brand New Clutch Will Grenade Itself.
it happend to me twice the clips looked good but upon furthur inspection half a chunk was missing on one of the clips.

Umm, this is probably going to be a far cry from whats really going on. You guys keep going for weird abstract stuff rather than thinking simple first. Sheesh.

Let him drop the tranny and see whats going on before you start having flights of fancy with your ideas that will probably mislead him.

Any miles put on the new clutch before it started happening? If so one of the springs could have broken out of the clutch due to improper installation or flywheel resurfacing and jammed itself causing the same type of issues. Regardless like everyone else is saying its more then likely the clutch or tb.

I have to agree, with Danny this is a symptom of when the clips break or tare causeing the throwout bearing to not engauge properly
