whats the trick to screwing the studs into the block?
are they torqued into the block before putting the hood on... or just hand tight in?

The pics are deceptive. You need top put the head on before installing the studs.

Clean the holes with a tap first.
Install the studs dry.
Just turn them in by hand or with an allen key. Then torque them down once the head is on in the specified sequence mentioned above.

I dont understand that part in bold, but i see the provision for an allen wrench in the picture now.

Put studs in block, head over studs, install nuts :P. I think he meant that.

Thanks for this thread!

And Lightning Motorsports only has the B18 ones.

golden eagle has combined part numbers the same head studs work on both the b18 and b16. Thmotorsports has the application chart on their site. oops thats the main studs.

you mean put the head studs in and torque them to 10lbft. Then you can put the head on and torque the nuts down. Just to clear up the studs are barely long enough depending on the thickness of the head gasket and how many times the head/block have been surfaced. I used the metal ve head gasket which is 1.5mm thick. My block and head have only been surfaced twice. Once by the factory and once by me.

nope. You can't get the head on if the studs are already installed in the block. Mainly because you need to angle the head to get it over the chain guide.

So you want to:

put head gasket on block
put head on block
install headstuds by hand, or minor pressure with allen key
install washers and nuts of the headstuds

there's more than enough stud length no matter how thick your headgasket is.
