Upon further reading, it appears that although the ARP 204-4204 studs are not undercut (for the VW engine), they actually are almost the same length as the undercut SR ones...so that route won't work if you want full length studs. If you look in the 2011 ARP catalog you'll see that 204-4204 are for VW.

I'm still kinda not convinced that the new ARP 2000 series studs are junk...I may get them to spite the naysayers and then they can all laugh at me when my engine explodes

Also, I realized why the torque specs are different for the 102-4701 and that has to do w/the new ARP lube they provide in the kit. The old 'Moly' lube had a tq spec of 105 ft lbs for the U/C studs and the new 'Ultra-Torque' lube that comes with 102-4701 only requires 90 ft lbs.

I believe it was only the VW 204-4204 studs that had instructions for 80 ft lbs. I have a feeling people were buying the U/C 102-4701 studs and only torquing them to 80 ft lbs when they were supposed to be torquing them to 105(old MOLY lube) which may explain failures some were having.

I don't recall people saying they are junk. I do recall people saying that there is better options.

From what I've read from others who've gone through various head studs, the Mazworx's are hands down the best..but then what's left? ARP. There are only 2 head studs being made for the SR these days Mazworx and ARP

That being said, for all the hours I've spent reading about head studs on SR motors I'm almost convinced that it is due to the misinformation out there regarding the ARP studs that people were torquing them incorrectly which resulted in a lot of the head gasket issues people were having. Plus, I would guess the new ARP 2000 series studs are stronger and will be more reliable than the old 204-4204 studs that were being used and whatever magic 'super-torque' lube ARP supplies with the studs only enhances their strength.

I mean..they gotta be better than OEM bolts, no?

There are a whole bunch of options for head studs just way out of your price range.

Tomei, Greddy, Cosworth and I believe a couple more but every single one of those are in the $400 price range or more. So yeah right now the Mazworx are the best studs out there and cheapest. Just as good if not better than the 3 that i just mentioned.

True, and the fact that 99(.9?)% of us here are not building ridiculous engines so no need. So really the only real options are Mazworx and ARP.

::EDIT:: Please reference this thread for more proof of ARP2000 ARP studs:
