Thread: Honing Question

Hey guys. Just a question out of curiosity. Honing necessary when crosshatch is still present on the cylinder walls? I was thinking of dropping some 10:1's in a spare block I have. Definitely thinking of putting in new rings however I was wondering if the honing step is completely necessary.

If your can still see the crosshatch pattern, I wounldnt worry about it. The crosshatch patter from cylinder honing is there so the pistons rings will seat correctly.

If its still there drop em in. Like zac said its all for helping the rings seat better.

I would always bore then hone. Bring it to your machinest and i bet it wont be perfectly straight. Unless it was bored/honed a few thousand miles ago.

The blocks are not bored from the factory with a torque plate , so when the head is torqued down the bore have a capability to not be square ...even from the factory , but with a boring and honeing with a torque plate has the potentail to give you better ring seal then the motor had from the factory .....a quick hone would not hurt , but if the croshatching is still visable ( I have heard of 90k plus mile SR20s still having it ) ....I would think you could get new rings to seat with out a problem ...
