Two Qs including biggest noob Q of all time!
#1, Can someone post a pic of the location of the knock sensor on a lowport? Thanks.

#2, I assumed the stock shift knob is just threaded on. I was trying to twist it off and it wasn't giving. I didn't want to twist it too hard and break it if there is more to it than just twist it off. I know some cars stock knobs have tabs that have to be pressed as well but i didn't see any... Does it just twist and I need to twist harder?

The stock knob is threaded on. Some people can un-thread theirs without issues. Other people have had to remove the entire shift lever from the car and put the knob in a vise (or drive their car over it) to hold it and get enough force on the thing. It can be glued on real well.

Give me a minute while I look for the knock sensor pic.

Okay the knock sensor location for a lowport can be seen in this picture.

The knock sensor bolts to the threaded hole on the intake side almost directly below the gap between the #2 and #3 intake ports. I'll try to find a picture with the sensor actually mounted. I know there is one out there.

Pita to get to and unscrew, then screw back in! I love high port for this, so much easier.

Mannnnn that does look like a pita...

Oh well, it needs to be done :x

Would I be better off removing the IM and getting at it that way? Or is it a pita but noenough of a pita to warrant all of that?

I wouldn't take the mani off. If you can, find a lift you can get on. Thats the easiest way to do a knock sensor. Other wise put the car on high jackstands.

On the shift knob situation, It might seem crazy but in my old B14 I lit mine on fire with a torch and melted it till it started to come off. It was pretty easy. Otherwise it felt impossible to get it off like urs.

You shouldn't have to feel like a noob or feel bad for asking questions. Asking questions is how you learn. Not everyone is born knowing everything so don't feel bad because you have questions... ask away.

You drive a b14 correct? Get rid of that v brace bullcrap and you will see how much room it opens up and you can work from underneath

Knock sensor is annoying but not really hard. There should be no need to remove anything. If you've done a starter or something else back there you're in good shape. From my experience the bolt holding the sensor on is usually torqued extremely high and really stuck on there. It will take a lot of force and leverage to get it off. Be prepared and don't scrape your knuckles. The new sensor should be put on with a specific torque as stated by the FSM and that torque amount is very important to follow. I think it's something low like 20 in/lbs or maybe 20 ft/lbs but I really don't remember.

Edit: What Morgans says about the V-brace is very good advice. The "V" shaped brace that looks like it holds up the intake manifold has to go. Remove that bastard and never put it back on. It will make things 100x easier whenever you have to do anything around the back of the engine and the brace is entirely unnecessary.

I also would not recommend taking off the manifold. I couldn't get mine off so I cut the head of the bolt off. It is a lot easier to cut the bolt off and find a new one that fits then take the manifold off.
