Thread: How to reset cam timing???

So here's the problem, I took apart the head without setting the motor at top dead center. The problem; how do I put the cams in time? I've put the head together with what I think is at tdc, and the cams in time, but the head's not holding compression. I know its not the rings leaking, cause when I put the compression tester the pistons went down, and it can't be a valve leak because i just put new seals and they held e85 for about 25min when I did a leak down test. This is why I've come to the forums. I need any suggestions on how to fix this without takin apart the whole motor apart.

Any ideas of what it can be, please let me know asap!

Uhm, dont those 2 tests usually yield numbers? Such as compression PSI and leakdown percentage? Plus, if you're doing a leakdown and don't know where TDC is, that's not going to do anything for you.



Doesn't mean anything. Just means pistons moved. And I assume you're talking leak down tester, not compression. A compression tester is a passive test, not active. It won't make anything move.



You do know that valves can leak from more than just seals, right? Seals likely wont be a compression issue, they'll be a burning oil issue anyway. And as I said above, you don't time how long it holds, you look at the percentage of leak the tester is showing you and listen for where it's leaking out.

Ok so how do i put the motor back in time. Ive done everything that at least i know to figure out whats making the valves leak under only pressure.

I've got no issue pointing you to the threads, really, when they're tough to find.

Also, as a side note, it seems to me like you're 'testing' hasn't told you anything, and you're shooting in the dark. If you re-do the tests properly and post the actual results, we might be able to identify the real problem. Maybe it is timing, maybe it's something else. Seems like you really don't know, and you're likely to cause yourself more trouble if you dive in too quick without the proper diagnostics.

Is it possible that the rockers have to be in a certain order and they're holding the valves open??? Also when I did the leak down test to anwser ^? It held steady at60psi on the gauge but I felt air coming threw the intake and exhaust ports.

You really should have someone helping you with your leakdown test thats done it before. The gauge you're interested in shows percentage leakage, with a target range of 10% to 15%. Not PSI being held.

Also, all the rockers should be identical, so no issue there.
