Thread: car wont start after idle

ok i have a 91 nissan sentra se-r that will not start after idleing for 5-10 min. the car runs and initially starts up fine. but after running her around town and let idle for 5-10 min she wont start back up. she starts up every morning just fine. its only when i do city driving when this happens. i had the battery and alternator checked and they were fine. the temp gauge does not indicate overheating and the fans kick in when in idle. as soon as i jump the car it starts up with no hesitation what so ever. any ideas? thanks in advance.

how about iacv and aac valve have you checked or cleaned them lately?

In what way does it not start? Like, does it crank or do nothing?

when i turn the ignition the guages turn on and i can hear the fuel pump churn but the engine does not do turn over just a click.

Check your battery connections. 10 bucks says they're corroded and you're not getting enough power to the starter. Also check the connections at the starter as well and make sure they're clean. Could also be the starter solenoid, as well, which seems more likely since it fails after heating up.

the battery cables are the first things i checked. cables are clean. starter solenoid..... have not checked that one. ill check the manual and have a look at it. thanks.

sounds like a starter issue

after hunting down some answers elsewhere i do believe that my starter solenoid is the culprit acting up when heated. so is the starter solenoid attached to the starter itself or are they separate entities?

i believe its located near the passenger side firewall by the oil filter. correct? what is the best way to go about removing the starter. it seems like a tight fit from the top. and the bottom doesnt look to promising. there were three or so hard lines running across the area. part of the cooling system i believe. if you can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it. thanks again.

You have to take the started out from below. Put the car on jack stands. Pull the intake to expose the 2 long starter bolts that run from driver's side to passenger side through the tranny under the throttle body. You can recognize them because they sit on either side of the bubble in the bell housing that accepts the starter. You reach them by leaning over the drivers side fender.

Then go underneath and look up past the passenger side axle to find the starter. Unhook the electircal connections and then get a buddy to pull the bolts from above. The starter will drop down into your waiting hand. This is easier to do with the axle removed, but it's not necessary.

Installation is the reverse of removal. Just position the started from below while a buddy threads in the bolts.

Come back if you have questions. And the starter motor and soleniod are a single unit that will all come out by following this procedure.

I'd go for starter as well.
I just removed mine about 4hrs ago so it's still fresh in my head.
If it's not been off before (and RHD and LHD are the same), then the one point at which Nissan fumbled was the way in which they secured the earth line to the back of the engine. It's a clip that seperates in 2 leaving the female end as part of the starter wiring, and getting that off its mounting bracket is a pain in the butt. Brute force to twist it sideways off the metal bracket has always worked for me
