That's exactly how i did mine! Really the only way to deal with rust.

And you can either weld a new peice of metal or a harder method would be to rivet in a new peice. Then either grind off the welding " peanuts" to a flat surface or straighten the riveted in metal as much as possible.


Some bondo, some sanding, then shaping , then smoothing, an assload of primer, i literally used 2 cans on both sides. apply, let dry, apply let dry etc.

Then paint, was as good as new

It's really very easy to do, just time consuming, but IMO my B13 is worth it.

that Jasco stuff that off road companies use to prevent rust takes rust right off. just spray and wipe away. make sure you use gloves though, this stuff is killer. then after you got it down to bare metal, hit it with this stuff:

aircraft spruce ships sells aircraft grade zinc chromate/zinc oxide primers and ships directly to your doorstep. reasonably priced as well. this stuff is a MUST have if you're going to be painting bare metal. it etches into the metal so when you apply the paint it sticks like no other. i have used this on multiple engine bays, roll cages, interior metal, etc now and love the stuff.

To get rid of rust and actually stop the process, this is what you need to do:

Cut out the *really* bad parts that are unsalvageable
Sandblast the old rusty parts until it all looks like clean steel
Weld in new steel
Bondo it to smooth it out
Prime the section ASAP
Paint it ASAP

Priming buys you a *little* time but it's not a sealer. *NEVER* drive a car around that has bare primer on it. Paint is what protects the steel from rusting. Make sure you do this all in as quick a sequence as possible, because bare mild steel begins rusting in 7 minutes. Obviously you can never stop it completely, but the faster you get it done, the longer it will last.
