Thread: Starting an engine without the transmission in place

Hey everyone. I have a shell and a spare motor I want to test out. Is it possible to test run the engine without the trans/flywheel/clutch installed?

I just want to see how it runs and if it makes any noises or leaks fluid.

don't see why not. as long as all the coolant lines and fluids etc. are in the engine.


But how would you start it if the starter is bolted to the tranny?

^^Yeah I just realized the same thing. I'm going to need the flywheel to turn over the motor. I'll just have to figure out how to hold the starter in place without the added metal the transaxle provides.

Get a 4-6 inches of stock steel tubing and you can cut it in half, and some washers... From what I rememver the starter bolts thread into the starter. That way you can keep it in place w/o the trans.

hold the starter in your hand................. ok don't do that you may lose a finger hahaha

Get some long enough bolts,nuts, washers to hold the starter in place.

You can probably get that at home depot for less than $3.

I always wondered about this also. I didnt want to throw my tranny back on only to find out that the motor I just bought was bad or something. I just wound up throwing the tranny on though.

Wont the tranny sensors also keep it from running?

You can just bypass everything (neutral switch) by jumping wires at the starter.
