I saw Mobil conventional oil advertised for 10,000 or even 15,000 miles but personally I wouldn't leave conventional oil in my motor that long, I don't care what the experts say.

I guess I don't know much about cars either Cause I build engines, rebuild tranny's, do suspension work, and anything else car related

And I still change mine every 3k, but the way I treat my car's I need to. The SE-R get's it every 3 to 3.5k max, only ever gone over 4k once. The SS get's it once a year weather I drive it 500 miles in that year or 3,000 miles. And I run royal purple in the SS, the nissan get's whatever I have laying around

I change the oil every 3K miles or 3 months, w/e comes first, and to me 3 months is around 1.5K miles...

10k+ mile intervals on full synthetic with new filters ever 3k miles and topping off the oil as needed is not unheard of, not necessarily bad, and totally advisable as long as you know your engine and have oil analysis to back you up. This has been common for at least a decade. This is what the article refers to when they talk about 10k mile oil intervals I assumed.

This is precisely what scares me most about buying a used BMW. I never got to a position where I could get one, but if I did, popping the VC would be one of the first things I did.

The oil being dark has nothing to do with the condition of the oil. Just becasue the oil is black doesnt mean its not doing its job. The darkness of the oil is the oil trapping the very very small dirt particles not captured by the filter and also a tint from blow by gases and combustion. This is one of the first things i learned in automotive. Its when the oil starts to become sludgy is when its lost its viscosity and general properties.

I change my oil in my 05 MDX every 5,000 miles, i use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic and the oil is a brownish to a grey tint coming out. It has 98k miles on it as it sits. Ive never lost a drop of oil, no leaks, doesnt burn any. I pull the dipstick right before the change and its still right on the full line where i left it before.

No issues with changing oil at 5,000 miles especially with use of synthetic. However the age of the vehicle and mileage and how the motor was maintained plays a big part on how often you should change the oil. On my sentra, again not a typical everyday driver normal use car. We are talking major abuse, big power. I change the 15w-50 mobile 1 oil every 2000-2500 for one because i like to keep the engine clean inside and keep the oil as fresh as possible.

Thats my experience. Id say for high performance cars or engines that see a lot of abuse, i wouldnt want to go any more than 3,000 miles as thats not your normal use.

Oh yah, my engines don't last long enough to require oil changes.

hahahahaha, hey i was in the same boat man when i ran t25's and t28's. Think its time for a T3 for you Ben. Step up to the big boy turbos. Much more fun if you want some good power but without the detonation from the excessive backpressure that the t2 turbos create.

Trust me you wont look back after going to a t3. T25's and t28s were fun for a first turbo setup but you have been turbo long enough now that its time to move on. lol. I went from my engines lasting 2-3 months to well over a year and zero issues with detonation and that was making big power. The sr loves a large turbine housing t3. You can still see full boost by 4300 and have a solid powerband that wont even attempt to fall off until 7600. And zero issues with detonation. T2's are for those that just want that nice power and torque increase but not enough to really go fast. Its when you want to go really fast with them that you run into problems. I finally realized that after 5 motors. lol.
