Thread: Loosing coolant?

If them hoses under the intake in back leak from...say a pinhole...it is possible that it evaporates or drips on the hot motor or exhaust and turns to steam faster than it can hit the ground.
I hae had that happen on a high mile DE before.

It is a royal pain to change them hoses when the motor is in,unfortunately


I have also had an NX radiator with a pinhole stress crack on top that would also push out a drop every couple minutes when under pressure.It was evaporating quickly too.
I just happenned to be standing there once when it"pushed out a drop"

A very small leak in the back sounds very possible. When temps are below 180*, it seems fine, but when above it likes to climb at a slightly faster rate.

I also thought if it is a headgasket, wouldn't the oil be a milky color and some oil in the coolant?

Maybe the Nismo cap I put on a couple months ago has finally put enough stress on the old hoses in the back.

dang this is spreading like cancer! one of my sr's is starting to do the same thing..the temps alway ran below the middle line on the temp gauge(with no t-stat) until a month ago..i get the coolant smell, over flow tank fills/ drips at time.. the pin hole on the waterpump doesnt show anything,changed the sensors and fans switch on right temps..my oil looks great...bled the cooling system three times.....Hmmmm im baffled!imma change the hoses next and see wut happens...

i think you should try what this guy said, its not very much money to do so if it doesnt fix the problem it wouldnt hurt the pocket book.. LOL


seriously dude i just had this issue on TWO cars you would Never see where it was leakin from an the over flow was always dry when i looked.. same symptoms on 2 cars..

sometimes it seems like people just want to talk about their problems, instead of actually taking advice or tryin to solve the problem..

I have a nismo t-stat. I don't expect it to fail.

My ve does the same shit. I just keep adding water even after replacing the hoses behind the motor.

This is what i would start with ...if you can get access to a coolant system presure test kit start with that to completly eliminate a leak issue . then i would do a compression test cold and hot . then pull plugs looking into the cyl's to see if they look "steamed cleaned" as they usualy have carbon on top of the pistons . last do what 420 sugested g/l

I'm gonna get a block check kit and that will let me know if any exhaust gas is getting into thte cooling system.

I think a lot of people are giving un-heeded advice here, do a pressure test for leaks, put some dye in the cooling system, 'nuf said!
Ps, is it really gonna hurt the pocketbook for a $7 radiator cap and a $10 thermostat? Why not atleast test the nismo thermostat in hot water on the stove with a thermometer and make sure it's working properyly and not causing you to overheat at stoplights or something. Also radiator caps go bad all the time, trust me.
