Thread: Anyone dye'd seats before ?

Ok I'm looking to dye my once red sparco seats that are now pink . Has anyone attempted this before ? Is it a pain in the rear . Or has anyone had them professionally done and about how much . I don't feel like buying another pair of seats after spending $1400 on these .

I would be worried about the dye transferring to your clothes especially if you started sweating, theoretically it can be done easily

I would do some serious research on the different dyes. ie. Water/sweat/chemical resistance, fade resistance, ease of application, material type, etc.

I did the seats in my old 2002 (blah) civic.

I used the rit die meant for clothing, and did it in the washing machine per directions on the box. Came out great and never transferred to any of my clothes or anything, didn't fade in the year I had the car afterwards. You can pick the stuff up at walmart. I probably overdid it a bit, but I used 4 boxes. Go to a laundry mat and do it in their machines though, that is how I would do it next time

I spray painted a set Krylon Black once ... wasnt as bad as you would think ...!!

Ouch, I would never mess with the spray dyes... use the liquid or powder mix dyes from rit. they actually dye it, not just give it a top layer that will eventually fade away and rub off.

Plus, rit is like $2 a box.

PS: It works AMAZINGLY on carpets. Dyed my old stained up grey carpet black, and it looked like BRAND NEW black carpet... just be sure to vac the shit out of it first, i used a blue plastic baby pool and 6 boxes of black rit to do that, let it soak for a few hours stirring it around occasionally, and then rinsed it all off by hanging it from a clothes line and spraying it with the hose for awhile. Seriously, it looked freakin new.

Rit FTW. We manage small upholstery projects around the home with Rit. We generally use the Rit "bleach" first, so that the color is absorbed into the fabric much better.

Yeah bleach first, and don't you need to boil the cloth in salty water or something?

Thanks guys I'm looking into using the RIT stuff . My seats can't get any worse then what they are ! anyone know if they sell this stuff at fabric supply stores ?

Your fabric store should have it, if not there is always walmart
