Thread: Oil problems....again

Once again I have another problem with this P11. As of yesterday I have been getting this nasty chatter noise for about 30 seconds after start up. It almost sounds like trans gears are grinding but about half as slow. I have always had a problem with my engine getting oil pressure to the head on startup, it takes about a second for the valvetrain noise/chatter to go away and then it does not come back until the car sits for awhile. Now the noise that I am experiencing kind of sounds like that cam chatter but sounds a little less hollow. This noise speeds up/slows down with the RPMs as well as when it is coming down it seems to slow the descent when it makes the noise, almost like something in the engine is causing friction, slowing the fall and causing noise. After about 30 seconds you can rev the engine and the noise will not come back. You can only hear the noise when the hood is closed from what I have found out and almost sounds like it is coming out of the bottom of the car. My oil pressure gauge went bad a couple days ago so I am waiting on a new sender from prosport, it is always pegged at 100+ psi. Could I be having oil pressure problems in the head? I don't know if this matters/related but my jpipe to downpipe gasket is blown out and has a nasty exhaust leak there.

Cliffs:
-Rattling/grinding noise 30 seconds after startup
-Driving or reving the engine the noise will not come back after about 30 seconds
-Can't hear the noise when the hood is open and standing over the engine
-Engine oil is clean and filled
-Bad exhaust leak might be related?

Any idea what it sounds like?

I read your description before and thought maybe it was the HVLAs that needed bleeding but I wasn't too sure so I didn't say anything.
After watching the video I'm guessing a loose heatshield. Pretty confident actually that's what it is. Something thin and metal is rattling around. Could be a heat shield or an exhaust mount problem or a separated cat or something like that.

to me it definitly sounds like a timing chain issue or like ben said hvlas, ut to me it sounds like the drivetain rattling.

Is your engine swapped, or is it stock with bolt-ons? Am I wrong in assuming you have an intake on the car? With perhaps a breather? It sounds to me like the noise you're getting is just the crank breathing. I got a similar noise when I dropped a popcharger onto my stock engine, and a breather valve instead of that long hose that went to the stock intake box.

The only heatshield I have on the car is the one above the cat that protects the shifter. Odd that it goes away after about 30seconds and will not come back.



Engine is the stock lowport that came in the car, its DE+T with a T25. The noise only apears if the car has been sitting for 30+ mins and will go away after 30seconds to a minute after the car is started. Regardless if the clutch is in or out or you drive it or not.

Oh yah I forgot that part. :o

I had a rattling issue that would only be when my car was cold. It was a metal ring around the flex portion of my downpipe. There is one on either side of the flex. It was loose and would rattle like a bitch when the metal was cold. As soon as it warmed up it would go away.

It does sound as something rattle external to the engine, so I don't see any worries about the engine itself. Therefore I recommend you get somebody revving the car for you and check all those parts mentioned.

^ thats a good idea those kinda issues are better if you have 1 or more ppl listening on the outside of the car while someone else revs it to determine where the issue is coming from
