I broke an exhaust stud...WTB? Help?
the number 1 cylinder already had one stud busted and I managed to balance it out and break the other. So now I need 2 new studs and nuts.

Also I need some tips on getting out the remaining stud left inside the head. I have experience with stuff like this but it will nice to hear someone else talk about there method of removal.

Ps, also managed to break one of the 2 bolts that hold the egr tube to the intake mani. This will definately slow down the turbo install just a tad.:o

go to sears and buy an easy out kit and follow directions very easy to use just dont break the easy out or ur screwed, or drill the entire stud out and helicoil it. but make sure you drill straight in the middle or..well ur screwed again. always a pita. def soak it in some pb blaster, that shit is amazing.

I live by these Craftsman extraction tools now.

They seem to work when everything else fails (however they aren't great for HUGE stuff).
Got my exhaust stud out no problem, but exhaust studs aren't too hard to get out anyway. A lot of different things should work fine.

As far as getting new studs, I would try a hardware store. Your not gonna find a stud that has the same thread pattern for the nut as the old one, but if you can find one with the same thread that the hole in the head has, you can just get another nut to put on it. I went to Nissan for a new stud and nut and it was still the wrong stuff at a rediculous price. I ended up getting the stud from a local machine shop.

I didnt get the old stud out, my dad did, but he said he used a left handed drill bit. Thats about as much as I know sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Yah just grab some OEM stuff from Greg Vogel. Nothing beats the OEM stuff. I spent money on some Enjuku studs once and that was a mistake. =P

Removing broken studs is a bit of a pain. Lots of WD40, the left hand drill bit is a good idea and some times will grab the bolt that is being extracted and just pull it right out. The challenge is keeping the drill bit in the center of the stud that you are trying to remove but if you can do that the vibration and heat that the drill bit transfers to the broken stud usually will loosen it and help you to pull it out. Did I mention lots of WD40? If you are able to drill a hole into the stud without it coming out then the next thing to use is the pictured extractors. Don't forget to use lots of WD40. For some reason the thin viscosity of the WD40 seems to make it work much better for me when removing broken studs. If you slip to the side and damage the thread then you will need to drill larger and use the thread insert method. Good luck as this takes patience and is not easy.
