***XTD "9lb" flywheel review/6 puck unsprung clutch review!!!***
First of all anyone who is planning on buying an XTD "9lb" flywheel just know that the flywheel IS NOT 9lbs. Its 10.5lbs. At first this pissed me off because I was used to my Fidanza 8.8lb flywheel and the throttle response it gave. So I specifically wanted another 9lb flywhee. When I weighed it it came out to 10.5lbs. So I said oh well ill try it and see since the Fidanza made first gear useless. Even on hill climbs you would have to damn near hit 50% throttle for the car to even make enough tq/boost to get up the hill because the Fidanza is so light and didnt have enough weight to create the inertia you want for the car to boost.

Well today I finally got my car back on the road after doing alot of MAJOR work to it. Let me tell you...This XTD 10.5lb flywheel is THE BEST for boost! First gear I can actually floor it and itll spin but not crazy (Crazy meaning strait to redline light the tires up spin!) like the fidanza did. It revs JUST like the Fidanza did also, but now I can actually drive my car smoothly without having to shift super fast to make it drive smooth for daily driving. For NA the Fidanza was a dream. But for boost you need just a bit more weight then the 8.8lbs for it to feel right. THE XTD IS THE PERFECT FLYWHEEL FOR BOOST! I recomend it to ANY turbo guy.

Now onto my new clutch. Im starting to think alot of people in this forum (and SR20forum) talk out of there asses. Either that or they dont know how to match up a clutch disk and pressure plate properly for our cars. Everyone always says that an Unsprung clutch with break your tranny. Not my setup. I have an Unsprung Clutchnet 6 puck that I installed along with a 15-20% over stock Clutchnet Green pressure plate (Exact same as the Type 1 pp they used to sell that was red). Let me tell you this clutch is like butter. You want it to grip and it does but its not that crazy pressure plate plus crazy clutch disk grab. Its a cleaner more slippable with your foot kinda grab if you know what i mean. You can make this setup GRIP if you just let it out. But for daily driving this clutch setup is VERY easy on your leg and VERY "manuverable" (for lack of a better word). It honestly feels just like a spring Disk setup to me but with less of that springy feeling that I hate. I honestly will never use a sprung disk again after driving my car today! Anyone who doesnt believe me can drive down here and ill let you take my car up the street and back. Thats how confident i am that this clutch is WAY easy to drive but will hold stupid ammounts of power!

Anyway today was a good day! My car now has a new crank, new bearings, new steering rack with ES bushings, new tie rods, a new clutch, new flywheel, new pressure plate, new rear main seal and everything was cleaned up in the inside and resealed while I was in there!

Save some of that praise till later man. See how the clutch does over time. I think best is ACT XT or the Clutchnet 1x pressure plates with 6 puck sprung disc. Just me though! Glad you like your setup!

The flywheel looks good to me!

on other forums, i think dsm/mitsubish, they like the xtd set-up and i think on a 240 forum as well, alot say it hold well and have alot of miles on it, others say it doesn't or "heard it doesn't...it might be a love/hate kinda thing like JGY, i wanted to try it out but was afraid and i was thinking about clutchmasters stage 4 w/ their flywheel as well, but since u feel it's better to have a heavier flywheel for boost, i might try it out, it is alot cheaper $300 compared to $850 for clutchmasters

also, you have to follow the 500 mile break in period as well, correct? i heard it's imperative that you do...

I don't believe you have to worry about break in periods with puck style discs. I could be wrong, but I remembered reading that somewhere. I thought I was going to have to baby mine when I throw in my 6 puck sprung, but most that I have talked with said that it's a non-issue with puck type discs.

here's an ebay link i've been checking out for the past couple of days, it says at the bottom that all XTD racing clutches rewuire a 500 mile break in period, you get the clutch kit and flywheel for $297 plus $23 shipping, if it holds up, hell of a deal...

HHHHHHHMMMMM This info is very interesting. I know the XTD Ebay clutches are junk, glad to hear that they have redeemed themselves in the FW market tho.

Personally, i like the Fidanza FW, but yeah i guess i can see where it being too light can be an issue with boost.

Cool review, get back at us in about 5k miles for another update Wangwang....

XTD Cluthes SUCK. People who say they like them just havent had them fail yet. DO NOT BUY AN XTD CLUTCH! If it actually works fine and doesnt fall apart then you will be one of the lucky ones. I wouldnt take those odds!

As for the XTD flywheel. THey arent even close to $300. Try $200 shipped! I bought mine from the very same guy as that Ebay link. Dont be fooled by that 9lb ad though. They are really 10.5lbs. Even the seller knows this. I emailed him and asked him about it and he said they changed the weight. So I told him he should change the Auction title of the flywheel to 10.5lbs but I guess he wants to mislead people.... He did offer me a full refund AFTER I recieved the flywheel and after he acknowledged that he did indeed know the flywheel wasnt 9lbs

As for the clutch break in. Everyone has there own number as to how long you have to break it in. 400miles, 500miles, 1000miles ect. Supposedly with puck clutches you dont have to break them in. Thats probably because its pretty hard to break in a puck clutch when it grips like it does. With that said...I drove my car around for about half a day before I actually hit boost on the clutch. No problems so far "knock on wood".

well the puck clutches work kinda backwards than organic compound clutches, organic compund clutches the more heat the see the more likly theyare to slip, so breaking them in properly and making sure they dont see more heat than supposed to before really getting rough with it is a must. some organic compound clutches will slip reguardless if they see too much heat

as far as puck clutch they are completely backwards, the more heat they see the better they grip, so there really isnt a need for break in as far as getting the clutch seated or anything like that before actually getting rough.

but i think most people going from a organic to a puck style are going to have somewhat of a period of learning expierence driving with them if they havent drove on either a lighter flywheel and puck clutch or oem flywheel and puck clutch, just becuase the pedal feel, the differences in engaugements, ect it will take a little getting used to.
