- Ok, so I'm on my lunch break I stopped by my spot to crank the car. If fires right up, but it seems like the starter is not disengaging and keeping contact with the flywheel. The clutch still grips, and it seems to be fine. I wonder WTF is going on. Really don't want to pull the tranny, but it's looking like I have to. I actually have another starter coming in that I purchased off the board. Maybe try to install #3 to see if it still does it?

thats odd. I have broken the gear shaft before, but have not seen that happen.

looking at the pics you posted up makes me wonder if the starter wasn't 100% secured. Seems like having it jump from torque every time it starts would allow it to move more and more until finally the casing cracked from impact on the bellhousing. If the threads inside were weak or buggered up at all I wouldn't doubt it. There just isn't much else I can think of that would cause such a clean, impact-like break as you got.

^The bolts were super tight when I went to take the old starter out. I don't see how it could have been loose with the bolts that tight. I'm not sure what happen, but I do have a click click noise after the new starter install. What makes the starter disengage after the car has started?

the starter solenoid is only powered up with the key at the start position. when in the run position the gear retracts. I have had a stater with a short that would try and start while the car was already running. thats how I broke the gear shaft.

I think Rodney might be getting to the guess that maybe the cylinder was full of gas and had a brief flooded situation. ?

Maybe it locked up briefly enough to cause that kind of stress.

What made you think the injector was acting funny? Who cleaned your injectors? Did they replace the o-rings and pintle caps and give you a bench flow test printout?

I'm leaning towards the injector causing something, since its the know changed variable in the equation.

I'd also guess that the ticking is damage done somewhere.

soooo.....the nose on my starter broke off the other day....... - CamaroZ28.Com Message Board

Any mechanic that has been around for just a few years would have encountered a broken starter nose cone. They also would know that a backfire WHILE cranking or a flooded cylinder would cause that.

^This is where I bought the injectors from. I asked all the (I thought) right questions to ask. Your theory could be right. If the motor is shot, I will just go VE/N1 or small 2.3L and be done with it. The sound really sounds like it's from the tranny side, but I'll try to get a video clip today, or tomorrow so you guys can tell me what you think.
