Thread: Cleaner oil?

well it not only eliminates the filter by acting as one, but it acts as a better filter.

it filters so good that oil will stay clean for 40,000 miles... (as you understand)

ok.... how quickly do you accumulate 40k miles? 1 or 2 years?

Neptronix is saying oil won't last that long anyway.. I don't know if he's talking about conventional oil or synthetic or both.. I haven't studied synthetic much because I've read it will leak through seals on older SR20's..

but his point is that going 40k miles without putting in new oil isn't likely good if you only put 10k miles a year on your car, because you don't want 4 year old oil in your car.... or 1 year old oil for that matter..

I heard about seals being bad when using synthetic oil also. I did not make a full switch. I use Valvoline red bottle maf life oil and no leaks at all. Stuff is great. I noticed a huge difference compared to the dino oil I used for 5 years. Haha.

I don't know how synthetic degrades over time, but mineral oil does turn into crap after a while. The heat ends up beating it up. I think the shelf life for mineral oil is 1-2 years.

I can't find any straight answers about synthetic. But i'd venture to guess that the heat beats it up too. But i hear it does not cause sludge problems; the worst it could do is not lubricate very well.

Any car with a lot of wear and tear on the motor will have a problem with the switch to synthetic. This is actually more of a problem with Hondas of our era than our cars, for some reason. They are more apt to burn oil, leak oil, do all sorts o' nasty stuff.

I would base it on the tests they perform when you send off your oil samples.
After they tell you to change it.
Take away 15% to be safe and not worry about sending it off again, or do it randomly to check for wear in the engine.

I still think its a better filter and a great idea.
I would want to have a engine bay tuck, so I would have room to put it somewhere.

That's the biggest problem i see with it, where to mount it. I suppose the vehicle you have will make a difference but the sr20 in my car takes up a lot of room.

This will eventually make it to my vehicle, looking at my purolator Gold with 99.9% efficiency which btw is only at the 20 micron level.

and the centrifuge filter can remove particles as little as 1/10th of a micron... thats badazz

Personally I wouldn' t want to mount that big tank, runs oil lines all over the place and find a small compressor and power that, just to maybe skip some oil changes and filters. I like the idea of cleaner oil but those hoses make more chances for something to go wrong... leak...run the motor out of oil and boom. I do wonder if it lowers the motor's oil pressure any that could be a problem too.

Really I think the 40,0000 mile oil changes would be fine for a diesel but diesel is in a whole new ball park than the gas engine. Lower temperature combustion for example or the fact that semi trucks stay on for greater intervals, keeping the oil from absorbing water, which is part of why gas engines need their oil changed more often. Semi also need a lot more oil every oil change.

I will take my chances with my $5 Purolator for now but maybe after this technology is refined some more...?

So you dont like the idea of filtering out particles that are less than 1 micron big?

and your $5 filter only is efficient to about a 20 micron particle?

Centrifuge is awesome. The filtration abilities are awesome.

I would not even use that Mobil One shit to 15,000 miles. Those gimmicks usually only work on newer cars. Not our old cars.

That is expensive and big to (potentially) save very little time and effort. I send my oil out to be tested and it usually comes back as clean, but around 10k the oil (Mobil 1) starts to break down and lose its protecting properties. Unless that thing restores the properties of the oil itself I can't see much use for it. If the oil filter is that big of a problem, just buy GregV's oil filter relocator kit and be done with it.
If you do decide on buying one, I suggest doing a few oil reports with Blackstone first to see how much stuff is actually in your oil (particles, debris, etc) and how much life is left in your oil. If you're like me, the oil change mileage is based more on the life of the oil itself, not impurities.
