Lifters and shims
If someone could please confirm some info I would appreciate it. Been doing alot of reading and just want to confirm some info before I move on and screw some things up.

I am putting my head back together on my highport. I ended up bleeding the lifters as my head was sitting for quite a while and they were very cushiony.
It is my understanding from the FSM that the lifters are not interchangeable in respect to their original position in the head. Should have labeled them when the motor was first pulled apart a while ago, I labeled everything else on motor. But did not moving on....

I know that some are taller and shorter in respect to the intake and ehxaust sides. Will I be ok if I measure them and situate them in the head just in respect to their size.

Taller ones=intake side
Shorter ones=exhaust
???

Also for the shims....
Will they be ok if they are put back in head making sure that they JUST situate on the rocker arms correctly
OR is their position ALSO specific to each valve spring that they sit on??

Thank you for any responses/help in advance,

-Tomas

ok got this in another thread..quoted from Cliff...

Oh, and for a REALLY simple way to solve your issue: If you know your head has never been molested, take another shim from another valve, and measure it. Then go buy the same shim. Apparently (contrary to what's been taught), all shims measure the same in a virgin head. Exhaust AND Intake. (Thanks Dre!)

The shims aren't as important (size difference) than previously thought. The HLA is the "god" as far as rocker arms and shims.

Ok from reading this. I am not missing any shims they are just not in the same order they were taken out. So if all shims measure the same I would be just fine putting them back in just making sure they sit on rocker arm correctly?

Correct.

After much debate, I've learned that shims are not valve specific, contrary to popular belief. I will measure all shims in my possession tonight for clarification

Thanks. If you get to measure that would be great. Wouldn't hurt I will measure mine too.

Now if someone could help me out clarifying the lifters..

100% correct. As long as they measure with .001" it won't matter. If there is one .002" or more off then it gets debatable, but you could put it in anywhere and would most likely never notice anything unless the case hardening of a cam or rocker is bad.

Litters are interchangeable, but it's best to put them back where you got them. I do that just to keep track, if one should fail in the future.

ok..I'm going to measure them tonight with the caliber, can anyone confirm if the intake and exhaust sides are different sizes?

Read my post about the shims, and make sure not to make the same mistake I did, by putting the guide shim on the wrong side!

ok well just sproke to PWRDbyUNCLEbens. He was kind enough to measure his shims also.Thanks!
So I guess that all shims are not valve specific as Cliff posted earlier.
My shims measured the same as PWRDbyUNCLEbens. I measured multiple shims from my highport.
Regular shim----> .108
Guide shim -----> .108

courtesy parts has the same part number for lifters on both sides. But I am going to measure them for shits and giggles.

They're all the same size. The HLA is interchangeable with that regard. I meant that it's best to put them back so that when one fails you can catalogue it. KWIM?
