Thread: Rod Cap Nuts

Hey everyone. I just had a question that I didn't really find an answer for while searching.

I replaced some rod bearings a while back. I retorqued the cap nuts at the value listed in the FSM. There is no mention of loctite. I didn't use any.

However I just wanted to get opinions/experiences from others. Anyone with a failure from not having used loctite on the rod cap nuts?

I've read both the FSM and the Haynes repair. I've read both, the haynes recommends loctite. Likewise I did not use bc there was no mention in the FSM.

What are drawbacks of using it?

No real drawbacks I don't think from using blue except I'm not sure if it will hold up to the temps? (I don't recall the specs on blue.)
Red loctite should be avoided for obvious reasons.

I do not believe that the blue will hold the temps, or oil that contains any detergents. It's more of an "exterior" loctite.

I dont want threads crapped up with loctite if it even did hold, I thought it may give a false torque reading in future if it was on there when bearings may need to be replaced.

Cool. I was just curious. I really didn't want to open the pans back up, lol.
