Weird problem - engine cuts out sporadically
I'm stumped on this one. Kimme's NX, which I bought back in 2007 and swapped to a VE in 2009, is having a weird, intermittent problem. It will run fine for weeks, and then will suddenly start cutting out for no apparent reason. This usually happens while you are driving, and after 2-3 seconds it comes back on again and is running fine. If it happens while the car is stopped, it will start back up no problem. Kimme says it has been doing this for over 2 years, even back when it was still DE. It seems to be worse during the warm summer months, but it has gone 3-4 months (especially the cooler months) without doing this at all. I experienced this phenomenon first hand when I picked up the car from OEM last week.

Any ideas?

Here is an idea.

My car did this when my MAF was not snug on its clamps

It also did this to me during hot weather because my MAF sensor wires themselves were dirty as hell.

It may or may not be this, but it is an idea for you to look at.

Check the dizzy cap, rotor. Check spark wires.

Does it have an aftermarket alarm??? Could be a bad relay...

Joe,I had a similar problem...it ended up being the power transistor.

Here is the thread from when it happenned.Check it out.Especially the 1st post and post #18 when I figured it out.

Just to add another idea to the mix, my first thought was the fuel pump (since I assume it stayed the same between the swaps).

Not sure if this will help with any diagnosis, but I was out running errands in the car today for about an hour or so, pretty hot day here today and it started to cut on and off within 1 to 2 second intervals. It would have these "fits" every 5-10 minutes or so. Then at one point I came to a stop sign, it died and would not turn back on, I tried about 5-6 times before I had to pull over and wait afew minutes, it then cranked back up perfectly.
I noticed that if I accelerated very slowly and carefully, it would not cut off or have any "fits" at all... but anytime I'd accelerate quickly at all, it was back to messing up.
Also, there is a raw gas smell every now and then, but we can't seem to find a leak anywhere..

I'm having the same problem. I replaced the MAF with a used one from here and it seemed to fix it for roughly 2 weeks and it came back this weekend. Still trying to figure it out. Going to run test on the maf and replace the front fuel filter. If that doesn't fix it then i'm going to replace the rear fuel filter, then the pump if it persist.

Could be a fuel line inside the tank with a small crack. Also Old Red (Rodney's Chi Town and GA beast) had a bad injector. It is ever so slightly possible that both engines have a bad injector.....
