How to/Tips on painting a car??
Hey guys,

I'm about to get my car painted and I'm looking for some advice please. It's the first time I'm getting a car resprayed.

I have 2 or 3 people/places in mind to do the painting for me but I'm not sure what to ask or what to look out for? I want to ensure I get a factory looking paint job.

What is the correct process or critical factors of a successfull paint job?

The car is red and I'm going for a darker shade of red, so this effectively means a full colour change. I'll be stripping down the car removing as much as possible before sending the semi-bare shell for painting.

Thanks in advance.

prep work is #1, if the prep work is shitty, then so will the paint job.. either do the prep your self, or pay who evers painting it to doit, but be sure its done right..

my car was factory red.. i think they call it aztec but not sure since its a 91 an i heard the colors changed slightly from the 91/92 an 93/94s but anyway its burgandy now an the prep work sucked.. the paint is flaking off on the bumpers an around the trim.. they skipped over alot of things also..

i think they just taped it up an sprayed.. no sanding or anything, but idk..

anyway the prep work is most important part IMO.

Yeah I also hear everyone talking about prepping being very imporant. That's why i'm stripping the car down myself. Want to ensure nothing get's painted that shouldn't be painted.

But with regards to the rest of the process, what is the correct way of doing it? I hear a lot of talk about wet sanding etc?

yea i believe wet sanding is done to get rid of any irregularitys on the surface of the paint an then buffing it makes it shine like its suppose to.. honestly if your payin to have it done, make sure they go all out.. otherwise maybe just do it your self.. or atleast the prep work an final touches..

i would stay with original color or close to it unless you are going to be doing the engine bay and b pillars and trunk.

maybe it's me , but it annoys me when i see a car repainted a different color than original because of the engine bay and other areas not done right.

Engine is out of the car. Getting everything painted, engine bay, trunk, inside of doors etc.

Agreed, unless the car's original color is black, then you don't have to worry about painting the engine bay black

I agree with this. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all.
