you have to get the ecu into timing mode and then adjust the distributor accordingly to get a true difference in timing and adjusting the distributor

Well I forgot what each of the marks represents in degrees, but here is a picture of where it generally is:

Those timing marks are waaaay too far to the left, aren't they? That looks awfully advanced to me. What do you guys think?

I would have to second that haha... that looks way far to me. Seems like your theory might be correct then, something is off internally.

Looking at the pics it looks like you skipped a tooth. Pop the valve cover off, set it to TDC and take some pics. Ohh and if can always be set to point that it cannot bend your valves like you mention. Skipping a tooth or 2 will only make your car run crappy as hell.

Yeah the fact that you can get it to run perfectly when you completely retard the timing sounds 100% like you skipped a tooth. Skipping a tooth = +- 10* of timing depending which way you went, looks like you advanced. When I installed my cams I did the same thing, retarded it on the intake by one notch I believe. Car would not rev high at all. Very very slow rev building.

I actually temporarily fixed it by adjusting the distributer timing, but decided to go back under the valve cover later to correctly fix the issue. This definitely sounds like what it is.

Yup looks like you skipped a link in the chain. Also I would ditch those spark plugs. I had the same ones for a day in my t25 setup and the 2nd day whenever I hit boost it would break up badly. NGK FTW!

well for refrence after you get your timing set correctly with tdc and all that, make sure you use the proper technique to get your timing set correctly, there is a good write up in the how to on how to getyour timing set with pictures.
