that other aac is definitly newer looking than your older one.

your compression is definitly high. did you rebuild the motor? aftermarket parts or anything?

are you throwing any codes

It sounds MAFalicious to me...

My car did that exact thing once when my clutch cable somehow grabbed the MAF wire and unplugged it :o

No codes, but it's OBD1 so that doesn't mean much
Yes I did do a rebuild with S4 cams, 1mm over sized valves, high tension springs/titanium retainers. They also milled the head down a bit to get it flat.

hmm what about pistons? stock compression ratio?

Stock pistons.
Also, I checked the MAF sensor, and it appears to be good. Voltage reads 0.78 volts when it's warm, with the engine off and the key in the On position.

Do you guys have any other ideas? I'm stumped.

OK this is really weird - if I retard the timing as far as the distributor will allow me, it runs just fine. Look:

did you go through the whole timing mode to adjust your timing like that?

maybe your cams are 180 out or worse...

And do you know what the timing is actually set at now?

Timing mode? What do you mean? I just started the engine, and turned the distributor until it would idle on its own. Cams aren't out - I followed the FSM to a tee.

Here's another thought - what if when I put my timing cover/chain on, I ended up shifting the chain over by one link on the crankshaft gear? My immediate thought is that the pistons would've hit the valves if it was off by one link, but then again, maybe it's close enough so that it would not?

EDIT: I'm not sure what the timing is set at in degrees, but I can check really quick...
