Thread: swapping transmission internals?

what is the difficulty level on doing this? i have never done it before but now is the time that i have to learn. Either i am going to swap internals or i will have to bit it and pick up a complete transmission.

i am not new to my car and doing repair but i have never taken about my transmission before.

Transmissions are cake. Just make sure you have a manual handy and you should be good to go.

I've got an SR18 gear stack if you'd like it? 45k miles on it. Let me know bro.

Easy job. Shouldn't be a big deal if you are somewhat mechanically inclined.

Jack car
Remove wheels
Remove axles
Disconnect battery
Unbolt starter
Unbolt transmission from rear mount
Remove intake related items blocking transmission bolts
Remove clutch cable arm from arm on transmission
Remove bolts from around transmission
Shimmy transmission off, and let down gently

More or less that's it, and then reinstall.

yeah I can pull a tranny out of my car byself in little over an hour. I broke my bellhousing so i'm trying to decide. Either buy a complete new tranny or just swap parts around.

Buy a new one, unless it is a p11 or b15 tranny.

Pretty easy to swap stuff about, i built one out of 2 for my last open diff one, SR18 case and diff with 20 gearset and crownwheel. (Pin came out of old diff and smashed the casings)

When I swapped over to the B15 tranny I swapped all the gear stacks out myself, and even switched out the main shaft and final. It was my first time for any internal tranny woork. It wasn't as hard as it first looks. Just make sure you have all the tools and a copy of the tranny section out of a FSM and you will be good. Slow and easy wins the race.
