Well, I thought that would fix it, but no! The engine cranks but still won't fire, even with a new, intact cap and rotor! And unlike before, when it felt like it was trying to fire, now I don't even get that - it just cranks and cranks and cranks. I have spark and fuel in all 4 cylinders, and nothing blocking the air. Could something in the distributor itself have gotten out of alignment and thrown the timing off? I'm really at a loss...

Sure you got the firing order correct when you put the wires back on?

91. I don't have a compression tester, but the engine cranks the same way now as it has all along, not faster as though it had lost compression. I checked the firing order at least 3 times. Cylinder 1 is all the way to the passenger side, right? The cap is marked for which wire goes where.

How much have you been cranking it? Maybe the problem WAS your rotor and is NOW fuel soaked plugs. Happened to me once...
