Thread: Flywheels Aluminum vs. Chromoly

I have read the flywheels threads,and there is some great info there.I have some other questions...

I have a JUN 10lb chromoly and a JWT aluminum one with replaceable pads like the Fidanza.Other than that feature,what are the advantages or disadvantages of Aluminum vs. Chromoly?

Does the aluminum dissipate heat better?
Is the chromoly stronger?
Less prone to warping?

how much are the plates?

I have a chromoly one, and it's turnable, turning was $50 last time I was working at a shop, that's what we charged customers, so it had to be cheaper than that.

I trust in turning more than plates. I look at the thing as almost a brake rotor, I would not want aluminum brakes on my car. I have an odd point of view though.

Your point of view, I feel, is correct. I agree with it.

Aluminum is limited in applications on cars, let alone our cars.

gotta go with light is better here. When do we hear about flywheels cracking or blowing up?

I've seen it happen, and the result is not something you'd want to have happen to your car, or anyone else's car.

Sorry to be offtopic, but lemme throw this out there: don't go *too* light. You can end up with problems like flywheel chatter, bad engine vibration suppression, and so on!

This is more of a problem with ultralight aluminum flywheels vs. chromoly - which is actually a type of steel used in crankshafts and things like that.

Aluminum warps much easier, so if you enjoy 4000rpm clutch drops, i'd definitely go with the chromoly.. lol.

Aluminum flywheel is better.

You can only turn a fluwheel so much, with the aluminum flywheel you just change the plate and role out.

It all depends on what you plan to do with the car.

this is why I run a fidanza. Being able to just replace the friction surface is very handy and extends the life of the flywheel. The plates cost about the same as getting the flywheel surfaced.
