Thread: could someone tell me

Why and how did my passenger side axle nut come off along with the cotter pin, there is about 1/4-3/8" space between the cotter pin hole and the nut when its tightened on both sides, the cotter pin is gone on the drivers side but the nut is still there, yes I did put a new cotter pin when I changed the engine and bent it the right way

I've driven about 1500 miles this week all highway so 75+mph, I noticed a noise coming from the passenger side and went to check it out I found the nut missing and, my front passenger caliper is leaking pretty bad too, and so is my drivers rear caliper

The axle nut should have a crown cover on it for the cotter pin to grab onto. The pin itself will apply zero pressure to anything, but it will seat into the crown grooves to stop it from rotating. The space you're referring to is normal. The crown cap and it's design will cover that gap to the pin.

Most people that have worked on their cars without knowing this don't remember what that crown cap piece was for, and either lose it or toss it. This is why you keep it.

There is no crown cap both axle nuts I had were serated, they were supposed to hold onto the cotter pin themselves but they came no where near the cotter pin

I don't know when I'm going to be able to get to the brakes because I won't have a day off for another 3 weeks or so (I drive about 1300 miles a week), I have an NX upgrade ready to go in minus ss brake lines and used non leaking calipers to go in the rear (the rears have been leaking since november, fronts just started)

Just in case you needed someone else to agree, this man has the correct answer. You were missing the nut crown the entire time and you need them.

Do you have a pic of it? I know I don't have them on mine... I always used the nuts that came with the aftermarket axles.

It does not have a crown cap the nut itself is/was a castle nut, but the top of the nut was nowhere near the hole for the cotter pin,

That makes me think that either the nut wasn't meant for our cars, or you may be missing a washer. Most every replacement axle I've seen have a standard 32mm nut, no castling. The cap is designed to go over the nut for the sole purpose of bridging the gap to the cotter pin to prevent it from turning out on you.

I guess ill have to go to the junk yard when I get out of work in the morning, are the 1.6L the same thread pitch and nut size
