Belt Adjustment Question..Pivot Bolt Needed?
Hey,

So, one of my belts is squeaking in the morning and I know that one of the belts either needs to be tightened or loosened, but I've been putting it off because the damn pivot bolts on the alt and p/s is so hard to get to.

Can I adjust the belt w/out loosening the pivot bolt? I wonder that because the FSM shows only the adjustment bolts being loosed and not the pivot bolt. For minimal adjustments, do I still need to loosen the pivot bolt or is that more for if I'm changing belts?

Thanks!

I've done it without losening the pivot bolts but that was for tightning the belts not sure about loosening the belts
.
if you don't already have them wait till harbor freight has those gear wrenches on sale (about $22) or buy a set from advance auto or wherever (about $30) makes a world of difference while working on the sr20, I just tightned the belts on my car the other day took less than 30 seconds with those wrenches

hmmm, well, I'll try tightening the belts a bit w/out the pivot bolt loosened. If that gets rid of my squealing belt I'll be happy

those gear wrenches are nice and I don't have a set. It seems the alt pivot bolt really requires an offset wrench to get off easy.

you can adjust without the pivot bolt, for me its just easier. but it can be done

what's really the point of the pivot bolt? I was thinking it's more for when you want to change or take off a belt to give you a lot more adjustment

I would loosen the pivot bolts then adjust. I know the alternator can be done with out loosening the pivot bolt but you may stretch or break the adjustment bolt in the process. From my experience the power steering belt cannot be adjusted with out loosening the pivot bolt.

it is more for replacing the belt, but its also for changing the tension on the belt to ewither loosening or tightening it
