my pulley is chipped too because of pulling it off for repairs and such. I really just need a new one myself, it's in sad shape. Using something that can utilize those threaded holes is by far the best way to go. I went cheapy and instead have a messed up pulley . Caution is the name of the game.

You can get two prybars and have someone and yourself push opposite eachother till you squirrel it off, thats what i had to do cuz i couldnt fit a puller in there

I don't care how many people have used prybars against the front cover with success, I would never do it. Swapping the front cover with the motor in the car is such a bitch.

Guys, use a balancer/steering wheel puller. Johnny had the bad happen unfortunately because he hasn't been there yet. Don't use prybars, outside grip pullers, your grannies panties or anything else for a quick fix. Get the right tool.

Well I tried the shimmy it off method and it got me nowhere. So I said **** it and went to go get some groceries for dinner and a pully puller. Well I cook the food and go back out to finish swaping my crank out. Put the ****ing pully puller on the crank pully and it seems like im making progress as it seems like its coming forward with each crank. About a minute into that the ****ing pully puller snaps off of the pully and leaves two chunks of the edge of my pully not there. That doesnt even make me mad though. I just throw it back on and try again. This time it grabs and holds. I tighten the puller bolt and it feels like its going to come. What happens next makes me flip the **** out. HOW THE **** DOES THE OUTER RING OF THE CRANK PULLY COME THE **** OFF INSTEAD OF THE WHOLE ****ING PULLY???? This **** is so retarted. Im sick as hell and im trying to get this stupid ass car back on the road. HOW THE **** AM IM SUPPOSED TO GET THIS PULLEY OFF???

Is there a specific Harmonic Balancer remover or whatever the hell it is that I need to get?? Somebody help me out here...

Also does anyone have a crank pully they dont need and want to send me for shipping or something

Sorry for quoting your entire post but I was honestly surprised this happened to you!!! You are generally very thorough in research and write-ups!!!

I was about to do the same thing 3 months and I did search the issue thoroughly, and yes in sr20forum and I did find SEVERAL posts that covered your accidents...

To make it short... DO NOT EVER USE a standard pulley remover there. Like those with the 2-3-4 legs that grab the outside of the pulley. I found posts of broken pulley legs, broken or badly scratched pulley outsides AND posts of shearing of the two parts of the pulley!!! Shearing/splitting in two parts is obviously due to the elastic connection between them that actually acts as the harmonic balancer.

The puller you are looking for is the one that has two 10-bolts instead of legs. You screw the bolts in the two holes on the pulley (NOT too far because you can still damage the front cover) and from there it is a totally uneventful pull-out! Pic of it in the FSM but it is common. I got one from LISLE Tools.

Sorry for the trouble you had!

Okay, here's my 2 bits...

I've never used a puller, and I've pulled a dozen or more pulleys in my time.

Here's how I do it:

I use a stout piece of bar stock or a big wrench handle and a couple of C-clamps.

I back out the center bolt until it is past the plane of the face of the pulley by 1/4" or so. Then I take the bar or handle and span the bolt head and put the c-clamps behind the pulley and across the bar PAST the rubber isolator ring.

Using EVEN turns, I get the thing to inch off. If it's stuck, you can strike the center of the pulley with a punch and a hammer to break any stick that there may be after preloading it somewhat.

Once you pull the pulley to the bar, back out the bolt some more and repeat.

YMMV, but it's never failed me.

Johnny, here is a link to the harbour freight version of what the guys are talking about:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=37824

You'll need two metric bolts to fit the threaded holes in the pulley. Let me go check what size...

(Insert Girl From Ipanema muzak here)

Ok, those are M6 1.0 pitch. Get ones a few inches long to have some wiggle room.

The proceedure goes like this: If you haven't already, clean those threaded holes out on the pulley. Now assemble the puller so the center bolt is threaded thru the hen's foot, and attach the pivot point to the center bolt. If you've already removed the center nut, thread it back in a bit (obviously you want room for the pulley to be able to pull off the keyed shaft), to give the pivot point something to turn on. Now, put the two small bolts through the puller with appropriate washers to keep them from going sideways, and thread them JUST into the face of the pulley. DO NOT wind them in so far that they contact the face of the front cover/oil pump assembly. Now you are all set; wind the center bolt in, and the pulley will slowly be pressed off.

Hope this is clear, and helps you out!

I have used the 2 pry bar method for 15 yrs. on 100s of Nissans and I have never had a problem. I guess I just know how to do it right.
