Why dont people post stuff like this up??? (Crank Pully/rant)
OK Im sitting here and Im pretty much mad to the point that I could shoot the **** out of somebody. Reading around on the SR20forum it seemed like most people either needed a pully puller to pull the crank pully or they were able to shimmy it off with out one. Well I tried the shimmy it off method and it got me nowhere. So I said **** it and went to go get some groceries for dinner and a pully puller. Well I cook the food and go back out to finish swaping my crank out. Put the ****ing pully puller on the crank pully and it seems like im making progress as it seems like its coming forward with each crank. About a minute into that the ****ing pully puller snaps off of the pully and leaves two chunks of the edge of my pully not there. That doesnt even make me mad though. I just throw it back on and try again. This time it grabs and holds. I tighten the puller bolt and it feels like its going to come. What happens next makes me flip the **** out. HOW THE **** DOES THE OUTER RING OF THE CRANK PULLY COME THE **** OFF INSTEAD OF THE WHOLE ****ING PULLY???? This **** is so retarted. Im sick as hell and im trying to get this stupid ass car back on the road. HOW THE **** AM IM SUPPOSED TO GET THIS PULLEY OFF???

Is there a specific Harmonic Balancer remover or whatever the hell it is that I need to get?? Somebody help me out here...

Also does anyone have a crank pully they dont need and want to send me for shipping or something

wtf?! how the hell does that happen? jeez. sorry to hear that bro. i'm sure lots of people have crank pulleys sitting around because a lot replace them with the UR or gspec pulley. just post a WTB add. who knows, you might get one for the price of shipping!

sorry to hear you're sick too. hope you feel better bro!

post pics of that pulley too if you get a chance. that seems really weird.

Sorry you are having so many problems. Try to be patient and work through this.
You have a special situation. Your pulley separated the outer from the inner. Try some Liquid Wrench and let it soak for awhile and maybe tap it with a rubber mallet to break it free. Now you might want to use a pry bar to get behind the pulley and slowly pry all the way around. Start at 0*, then pry at 90*, 180*, 270*, and repeat until it pops off. Some come easy and others are more difficult.
Good Luck

this is a good way to get it off just be careful not to pry on the pan because you might bend it and break the seal. then you'll be in deeper than you were before.

^^^Thats how you put a hole in your oil pump! Im not even going to try to attempt that! I dont need more drama!

I tapped the pully two good times after I took the upper oil pan off (the pully has a part that sticks out a bit that you can hit after you take it off) and I didnt get any slack on the pully so I didnt mess with that either.

Anyone know about these harmonic balancer removers?

Do they make slide hammers with the teeth on the inside? That would def work...

You know the ones you can use to pull out pilot bearings (terminology?) in the auto trans.

Maybe?

I have never had an issue as long as you dont be stupid about it. You dont need a lot of pressure, just in the right place. I took mine of this way and nothing bad happened. If you are paranoid then use a piece of wood to pry on.
This is not rocket science, just basic mechanics101.

You can in fact punch a hole in the front cover/oil pump by using the prybar method. I wouldn't do it and I don't blame the OP for not doing it.

What kind of puller was used? When I replaced the front main seal on one of my SE-Rs I actually used a steering-wheel puller. If you look at the crank pulley you'll see two threaded holes. I can't tell you what size they are, but find two bolts that work and you should be able to pull it off. That is, unless the bolt holes are on the portion that's become separated

How many legs did the puller have? Always use one with at least three. Did you use the crank pulley bolt for the puller bolt to press against?

Squirlz I understand that your trying to help so I wont catch an attitude (ive been doing that all day unconsciously). But I know HOW I would go about doing that if i wanted to take that risk but im NOT taking that risk! Your way isnt an option for two reasons...one: IMHO its the dumbest way to go about doing this because of the risk(if this was my DE I would do it but its not!). Two: if the pully was going to come off using that method then it wouldve at least budged a little when I tapped it those two to three good times.

Those two bolt holes that your talking about Ritt are what the harmonic Balancer remover uses to remove the pully. Im gonna go check with Autozone and get one of those instead of this 3 prong pully puller. The parts guy brought me one today actually when I went to get the 3 prongs puller and I was like WTF is that...I shouldve taken it instead of the BS I rented.
