well I think they removed the timing chain guide in newer SR20s so that wouldn't rattle in G20, depending on the year, so it might not be a suggestion they'd think of.

IN regards to the tensioner, I just did mine and it's always good to replace it every 100K miles or so. Some people never do it, it's a good thing to change. As far as the starter is concerned, it'll go when it goes. When it struggles more & MORE, then replace that. A small catch might not be a huge issue.

You can always try to save the starter by removing it, packing the planetary gears with tons of grease (and I mean TONS) and put it back on. They start to go when the gears aren't lubed up enough. There are write-ups on it. Good luck bro.

sounds like a starter to me, the timing chain isnt a big fix either if that is the case. but i doubt it. mine right now actually gets stuck which is very common and will grind really bad while its stuck but it usually releases after a second or so.

if you havent replaced the tensioner with the newer style then do so. its alot better plunger and alot stronger. no need to remove the guide and please dont, its there for a reason.

My best guess: Rusted cat/or flexpipe, metal on metal vibrating to a specific resonant frequency, at a certain rpm causing that sound.
