idk, pretty far. hook is off and chain is pretty tight. Car has been driven over 100 miles after cam swap and over 6k RPM quite a few times. No problems(yet

What is the motor idling at when you check ign timing? If it is idling high, the timing will appear off.

if its too high it wont take timing mode correct?

About 950-1100. S4 cams make it jump around a bit. Changing idle w/idle screw though didn't seem to affect timing too much and for how far forward the distributor is for 15*, idle wouldn't have much of an affect I think unless the idle was WAY off.

I definitely notice it going into timing mode w/the consult cable. Usually when we first do it, the car dies because idle screw is too low. Also, like I said we even put it right in the middle of the distributor just for the hell of it and the car was misfiring, hesitating and running bad. Distributor in the middle is at like 2* by timing light which would correspond to the symptoms.

OK, let's all take a break and ASSUME for the moment that my cam timing is perfect. Which, from what we all could tell it IS. Keeping that in mind, that cam timing is fine. What could my problem be? Is it impossible to have perfect cam timing, but yet not be able to set base timing correctly?

Oh where o where is Andreas Miko when you need him? *starts up the Miko SR20 symbol search light*(The sky illuminates w/an SR20 symbol, will he come?)

Already tried that. Several times. Reset codes AND reset self-learning.

1.) 20 links between marks on timing chain
2.) Sprocket marks at 10 and 12 o'clock

4.) #1 piston confirmed at top of stroke
5.) Rotor pointing right at No 1 spark plug.

Most of this stuff was checked 2 and 3 times by several different people(some 4 times).

We also swapped out distributors and that didn't fix it AND no knock sensor code.

So here's my problem. When we get the car in timing mode(w/a Consult cable), 15* of timing is FAR advanced. Almost towards the front of the car to get it into 15* timing. Car seems to run perfect at this setting. If we move it right in the middle of the distributor(where 15* "should" be), the car hesitates and runs pretty bad.

One thing that was brought up is that the crank may be off a tooth(note: crank, not cams)? Would you still get good cam timing and would this affect overall base idle timing if that was true? Anyone have any ideas what my problem is?

Are trying to set the timing with just the laptop and not a timing light on the crank pulley?

lol no. Get car in timing mode w/consult and using timing light to check timing. I know ECU thinks timing is always at 15*.

Ohhh ok. I had a slight problem with my timing too. I tried datascan but couldn't get it to take so I unpluged the tps and the IAC and got the car to idle. After I pluged everything back in I used data scan and that hit the spot.
