Timing Madness. Cam timing = Good. Base timing = Not Good?!? (A Mystery)
Hello All,

I made a recent post called 'timing woes', where I was having problems getting the timing set correctly. Some people said it might be the crank pulley separated or cam timing might be off.

So, this weekend we swapped in S4 cams. Everything used for checking cam timing looked fine. We checked cam timing before AND after installing the cams. I was having this issue before we even swapped the cams. But during and after the swap we confirmed cam timing was good.

This is what we saw at TDC:
1.) 20 links between marks on timing chain
2.) Dowel pins at 10 and 12 o'clock
3.) Crank at 0* timing
4.) #1 piston confirmed at top of stroke
5.) Rotor pointing right at No 1 spark plug.

Most of this stuff was checked 2 and 3 times by several different people(some 4 times).

We also swapped out distributors and that didn't fix it AND no knock sensor code.

So here's my problem. When we get the car in timing mode(w/a Consult cable & timing light), 15* of timing is FAR advanced. Almost towards the front of the car to get it into 15* timing. Car seems to run perfect at this setting. If we move it right in the middle of the distributor(where 15* "should" be), the car hesitates and runs pretty bad.

One thing that was brought up is that the crank may be off a tooth?(note: crank, not cams) Would you still get good cam timing and would this affect overall base idle timing if that was true? Anyone have any ideas what my problem is?

IDK, I'm really confused..

well i think it would be pretty easy to tell if the crank pully moved on yea. line it back up with top dead. that will be the second mark from the left when looking over the pass side fender. if that is still good then make sure ur didnt skip some teeth when installing the cams. i still dont know how people do this. if you change ones cam at a time zip tieing the gear to the chain and using the bungie cord trick it cant move on yea.

We checked all the cam timing several times before and after the cam swap. We used several zip ties and took our time doing the cams. I was having this timing issue BEFORE we even did the cams.

Distro needs replacement? Is #1 cylinder at tdc with the cam lobes facing out and the marks set correctly?

Cam timing looked perfect.

Cams were installed correctly. As I said, I was having this issue BEFORE we even installed the cams. Installing the cams gave us a good time to check for cam timing.

im sure i would be that concerned about it then. give the timing light what it wants to get where u want the timing to be. you do have the timing light on #1 right..im not poking just checking
