Thread: Replacing rear wheelbearing?

Anyone have a how to on how to replace rear wheelbearings with simple hand tools?

It is quite easy on the B13. I'll do my best without tons of pictures at the ready.
From what I remember you can't really buy the rear wheel bearings on their own. You have to buy a new rear hub as well.


Remove the axle dust cap from the rear hub to gain access to the rear hub nut. (Shiny gold thing in the center of picture.) Be careful not to ruin it so you can reuse it. It is easy to mangle.


Loosen the rear hub nut. This is a 30mm nut I believe but am not 100% sure. It will take a breaker bar and likely a cheater pipe to loosen.

Loosen the rear lug nuts.

Jack up that side of the rear at the front mounting point of the trailing arm (control arm).


Remove the lug nuts and the wheel.

Use your largest hammer to pound out each of the four wheels studs. You will need to re-install these into the new hub that you've purchased so be careful to not ruin them. Use a spare lug nut on the end of the stud to take the brunt of the hammer blow to prevent ruining the stud threads. or have new studs ready to go.

Remove the rear hub nut.

Unbolt the rear brake caliper from the rear hub assembly. There will be two 14mm bolts hold it on.

Tie the rear caliper in place with some twine to keep it out of the way.

Remove the rear brake rotor.

You should not be able to see the rear hub assembly with no obstructions. It will consist of the rear mount, wheel bearing, hub and wheel studs. Here is a picture of it out of the car but yours will still be attached to the rear suspension.


You can pull the hub and wheel bearing off of the rear mount by hand. The picture shows a puller but that is not required at all.


Re-grease the rear mount shaft and slide the new hub with new bearing onto the rear mount shaft.

Re-assembly is the reverse of disassembly.

There are a few ways to re-install the old wheel studs. One way is to use many washers and a lug nut to pull them into place.


They will be flush with the hub in the rear when fully installed.


Repeat for the other side.
