Name That Sound
I just got back from getting my STi muffler installed on my car. I was super excited to be getting a car that isn't annoyingly loud anymore... Then I walked up to the mechanic and he said "Man, that thing is loud". . He asked me to go listen to it. I started it up and I'll be damned if it didn't sound like sh-t. I can't fault the mechanic because I know he didn't do it. He actually did a hell of a job in fixing the pipe and getting it under the car nicely. Unfortunately it sounds like ass. Possibly worse then it did before.

So... My question to you all is what is causing the sound. In my experience it sounds like there's something loose in the muffler. In which case I have to find another STi muffler to get put on.

So what do you guys think?

That is all sorts of wrong. If the muffler is the only new addition to the situation I'd say almost for sure it is ruined internally. Seems like you got a raw deal. I wonder what it would look like if you opened it up.

I've never experienced an STI muffler on anything other than an STI though and only have Vadim's sound clips to go on so I could be wrong. Sounds like a loose baffle though doesn't it?

In my experience I agree that it sounds like a loose baffle. This blows because now I have to find another muffler, and pay to get it welded on.

i agree it sounds like internally thw muffler might have a bad baffle or something along those lines causing the exhaust note to be louder or like ben said just may be damaged internally. whats the price of the muffler you could if its damaged and you know someone who could weld cut it open check it out and see if its fixable unless the exhaust is cheap in that case just but another one

That mechanic did a great job at mounting it! Keep in mind it will be louder outside, while quieter on the inside. People say they hear my car, very unique exhaust tone that's fairly loud, yet I never hear it while in the car.

Definitely something is bad internally. Mine even under full throttle doesn't sound that bad or raspy. Which BTW what kind of resonator is on it?

I was told the car has the 2 1/2" VRS system with the optional resonator. Being under the car I can see a resonator. It's about the size of a catalytic converter.

I have high hopes for the muffler because honestly even though it sounds like crap it's quieter then what was on it. I just have to locate another one (for hopefully cheap). I only paid $50 for this one.

Now where you able to say shake the muffler and hear anything rattling?

Isfahan sent me this a while back. Check it out, it might be fixable too, though if you do what that guy did it wont be quieter.

I didn't shake the muffler. The mechanic told me he did and didn't hear anything. I would be willing to bet that one of those baffles is loose though. I'll find another muffler just sucks I spent money on this one already.

Are you able to negotiate with the person you got it from?

Yeah that's what I meant by it wont be quieter if you use the same method as the other guy did.
