....fukin c-clip.
The last 3 axles that were remans I had a problem with them. They seem to bee too oval and not round enough. They also fall toward the ground from gravity when you install them.
I have reuse them off the old axle with some luck, believe it or not.
Also,if you put a small amount of grease on the clip...just enough to hold it centered in the groove instead of floating all around, that will help keep it centered. That has worked great for me.

Othrwise I would guess that the seal is damaged,or not seated correctly(flush with the case.)

i think you will have to pull it out.
Check the clip, it may be damaged.
at 3/8 + 3/8 = 3/4 does sound like the right amount for it not it be engaged.
I find the best way to engage it is to use the inner CV joint play, pull the free play on the axle back, the slide it in like a slide hammer.
Works for me !!!

also eggman makes some excellent points.
try putting grease in there to hold the clip and or re-shape it a bit.
Don't overdo it you don't want it coming out over a bump.

I put the nut on until it is flush with the end of the axle threads, use a 2x4 and BFH on the axle to beat it in if the slide-hammer style isnt enough.
