Rear suspension help please, massive rust :"(
I noticed when driving my car on the rear passenger side strut when I hit a bump, I have a loud thump depending on street. Where I live there are alot of city streets so this has become annoying. I am running AGX/RM set up. I thought it was simply the setting on the AGX's. Well took a look at it the other day and pulled my back seat back to take a look. Found this

I went to a body shop, they took a look and told me that besides themassive rust, that the strut housing is probably gone hence the loud thumps over bumps. They told me they can cut all the rust out and put new metal and new housing for $300.

I dont want the my suspension to come through the top b/c if it does on old cars like these is it even worth it? Any suggestions??

seen this before - my bro's white nx. driving along, WHAM, whole strut is now floating. Had to get rid of the car. You're fighting an uphill battle man, best to save your $300 and try to find another beast. Sucks I know, I gave up my first nx to that. If you want to keep it until it buckles, Do what I did. Weld a patch inside, get some rubberized undercoating (the thick stuff you need a putty knife to apply), heat the can up in boiling water for a bit, putty that crap all over the inside of your wheel well, then do the same inside the car. Bought me another year or two before having to get rid of my baby.

Well we're not talking about a small bit of surface rust here man, we're talking about a bigass hole and look how far it's spread. I'm suprised the shop even said they'd do it - Every place up here said 'no way we're doing that, its a liability and if the insurance place finds out we welded a unibody rear 1/4, we're liable when it fails'

I mean look how close it is to the right weld there and to the one bolt on the strut tower. I can pretty much guarantee that it is already there just not showing yet.

or better yet, do what I said to do and sell it asap. At least then you dont have to see it die.

guessing the welds from repair would make it more prone to breaking?

the welds from repair would break your wallet.

find a clean shell and start swapping, sucks but it happens.

How about welding it with thick metal plates, getting a struttbar and maybe some better swaybars too?

From what I see on the pic, that won't pass annual inspection overhere but they weld that no problemo, there is no liabillity for that overhere.

You need to do it yourself or a friend that is willing to help you to cut cost.

Check out this topic: Knutseltje (just the pictures and click to page 2, I was pretty shockies.

Honestly 300 bucks is CHEAP for a rust repair IF they do it the right way. I cant see the pic cause im using a gov computer and they have most of the stuff blocked but if its alot of damage the 300 dollers would be worth it. Hell they charged my friend like 800 bucks to fix all his rust on his car
